T he thing I remember most about road trips with my father were the soundtracks. We had dozens of mix tapes that he would buy from markets during his trips back home to Karachi. They featured songs from playback singers like Suraiya, Noor Jehan, and Geeta Dutt, and ghazals from poets like Jagjit Singh. We would play these tapes alongside American greatest hits albums from Journey, Air Supply, Pat Benatar, and Fleetwood Mac. Music was always something that brought our family closer together.
